Greetings and updates from The Flower team! Even though things have been quiet on social media, it does not mean we haven't been busy. In fact, I have started pulling the final scene of the film together in After Effects. I estimate it will take me about 3 months to finalize, which might have something to do with it being 1591 frames (or over 66 seconds) long! Here is frame 1 in its raw/rough form with no flower level, no ripples or glow effects, clip mattes, reflections, or glows; just the background and main lantern. As elements are added to the scene, I will present them here so everyone can see how this one comes together. Because this scene has many elements, seeing them added piece by piece will give an idea of how many different parts come together to make a final image.

Also, for the last year I have mostly been funding this project myself, which I don’t mind doing as it is my dream project. Here is a look behind the scenes as I lay in the ink color on the flower’s stamen from scene 4. This scene is 534 frames long or slightly over 22 seconds; so needless to say, I have a full day of inking ahead. Onward!

We are hitting the Final Check stage of the production where all elements of each scene are starting to come together such as the lantern glow and text. Whew!

And just like that we have 25 of The Flower’s 36 scenes approved and ready for film print. Okay, it’s not just like that, as it has been many hours, days, weeks, and months, to get us to this point as a lot goes on behind the scenes which no one ever sees. However, those days are starting to add up and as each scene is finalized, there is now one less scene to complete than there was yesterday. I will leave you with a close-up image of the flower from scene 7 as I go back to work finalizing each blade of grass, each water ripple, and each petal of the flower in the next scene that just landed on my desk. Achievement Unlocked!! After two years of active

Achievement Unlocked!!

After two years of active production on The Flower, we have hit our first milestone: all character rough animation has been completed.

Ten years ago, I would have told you this was impossible, but with everyone’s support we have managed with artists all over the world to chip away at the remaining scenes one at a time, until all the character animation was completed.
Years ago, when I was at the Disney Florida Studio, I used to shrug off comments from the directors about how the team was great or what a milestone this or that achievement was; to me, it was just all part of the job. However, when you are on the other side of the coin and it is your project which you feel so strongly about, you can’t say it enough. I am so proud of the work our artists have done, and at the same time, I'm humbled at the talent that stepped up to join our team over the last two and a half years. They could have worked at other studios, and actually, most of the time they did; they worked on The Flower in their off hours and on their weekends, driving themselves to get the animation just right and dealing with my notes, for me, for my project. That is the most humbling feeling in the world. After all, The Flower is a small independent film with a small budget; thus, we paid what we could, but it was less than the artists deserved, and they did it anyway. I am honored by their willingness to be a part of this production and would hire all of them again in heartbeat. Thank you.

Today started with a humbling moment of disbelief

Today started with a humbling moment of disbelief as I did a final high-resolution composite of scene 2 from The Flower. Years of working on this project at the Florida studio, years of dreaming about this project as it sat in my closet, and the last two years of full production has seen the first scene of the film cross the finish line. If all goes well, we should have the remaining scenes pushed through the Ink & Paint phase by the end of summer. I would not be here if it wasn’t for the support and encouragement from so many friends both new and old.
